  10. First Toolkit to Integrate Group Scheduling and Custom Applications

  13. announced that the Application Programming Interface (API) for its
  14. popular group scheduling product, Pencil Me In<TM>, is now shipping
  15. on NEXTSTEP for Intel Processors and NEXTSTEP for NeXT Computers.

  17. The Pencil Me In API and the Pencil Me In Toolkit provide corporate
  18. developerswith access to a rich, established base of functionality
  19. for integrating, modifying, and maintaining time-based information in
  20. NEXTSTEP Mission Critical Custom Application environments, while also
  21. allowing end users to access the same information through Pencil Me
  22. In's superior calendar interface.

  39. About the Pencil Me In API
  40. The Pencil Me In API is a software library that gives custom
  41. applications the ability to launch and control the Pencil Me In
  42. application; create and work with Pencil Me In calendars,
  43. appointments, and action items; and set calendar access levels for
  44. Pencil Me In users.  Because of this close integration and because of
  45. Pencil Me In's powerful, multi-user architecture, networked users of
  46. both Pencil Me In and custom applications can operate on the same
  47. calendar files without interruption or corruption of scheduling data.

  50. Pencil Me In 1.1, the leading group scheduling application for
  51. NEXTSTEP systems, combines a powerful, scalable, network-ready
  52. architecture with an easy, intuitive calendar interface.  It enables
  53. users to integrate personal and group scheduling in enterprise
  54. computing environments.  For example, users can schedule one-time or
  55. repeating appointments, track action items, share calendars over a
  56. network and use group calendars to schedule meetings in a single
  57. operation.

  59. How Customers Are Using the Pencil Me In API
  60. The William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills, California, is working
  61. with SHL Systemhouse to develop its custom Talent Management System
  62. (TMS).  The two organizations are also working closely together to
  63. integrate TMS with Pencil Me In calendars using the Pencil Me In API.
  64. When the system is done, agents at William Morris will have a total
  65. client information management and scheduling system that uses a
  66. single calendar interface for both mission-critical client scheduling
  67. and group scheduling among the agents.

  69. Currently, agents at William Morris use Pencil Me In for their own
  70. scheduling needs.  They use the application to coordinate meetings,
  71. track action items, and manage shared resources.  With TMS, agents
  72. will be able to book clients for new projects using only TMS and
  73. Pencil Me In.  TMS will allow agents to access a client's record in
  74. the database and create a new booking for their client with all the
  75. needed information about the new project.  Since client availability
  76. is a critical factor in the booking process, TMS will also locate and
  77. launch the client's Pencil Me In calendar file.  Then the agent will
  78. be able to view the client's calendar and coordinate with their own
  79. calendars or other project and client calendars using Pencil Me In.

  81. "The kinds of scheduling tasks that agents do every day are
  82. complicated enough," said Alex Henry, director of MIS for the William
  83. Morris Agency.  "The integration between TMS and Pencil Me In will
  84. help us to simplify the user interface of the whole system.  And that
  85. integration will help to reduce the complexity of one of the agency's
  86. key business processes."

  89. Pencil Me In 1.1 and the Pencil Me In API run on NEXTSTEP 3.1 or
  90. higher for Intel Processors and NEXTSTEP 3.1 or higher for NeXT
  91. Computers.  The same version runs unmodified on either system.

  93. Licensing and Support Programs
  94. The Pencil Me In API is available now and may be licensed separately
  95. by registered Pencil Me In owners at no cost for use in custom
  96. application development and deployment.  Developer support is not
  97. included, although a variety of fee-based support programs for
